Judit Polgár is the child of a Jewish family from Budapest. Judit and her two older sisters, Zsuzsa and Zsófia, were participants in a pedagogical experiment: their father, László Polgár, proved that children are capable of peak performance if they are trained from an early age (in a manner appropriate to their age) in a specialized field. The parents educated them as private students, but chess was not taught to the exclusion of everything else: each of them holds multiple academic degrees and speaks between four and eight foreign languages. They are regarded among the best chess players. Judit and her parents remained in Hungary and live in Budapest. Her husband is a veterinarian; their first child, Olivér, was born in 2004, followed by their second, Hanna, in July 2006.
The best female chess player in chess history, and the only woman to have surpassed the 2700 Elo-point super grandmaster threshold. She reached her highest rating, 2735 points, in July 2005. Her best position on the overall world ranking was 8th place, which she first achieved in January 2004. She led the women’s world ranking continuously from 1989 until March 2015. It is unique that from the age of 12, she held the number one spot on the adult women’s world ranking for 26 years (312 months), which is a record on both the men's and women’s world rankings in terms of both age and duration of holding the top position. In August 2014, she announced her retirement from active competition. From 2015 to 2016, she served as the captain of the Hungarian men's national team.
