He was born as the son of Mór Gerde and Emma Deutsch. As a sabre fencer for Magyar AC, he was a student of the Italian coach Italo Santelli, who settled in Hungary. He represented the Hungarian national team between 1908 and 1912. He was a member of the Hungarian sabre team that won Olympic gold at both the 1908 London and 1912 Stockholm Olympics.
After his sporting career, he became an international referee in fencing. He also served as vice president of the Hungarian Fencing Federation. At the 1928 Olympics, he was one of the professional leaders of the fencing national team.
He earned a degree in law and political science in Budapest, and after retiring, he worked as the secretary of the Budapest Chamber of Commerce.
